  1. Check out John Richardson in 1965’s SHE, a Hammer production. He is the lover of Ursula Andress (“She”) in this, along with Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee. Classic film.

  2. Based on "The Viy" by Russian author Nikolai Gogol, who also wrote "Taras Bulba". It was also made into another, more lavish color film called "Forbidden Empire."

  3. The two most impressive scenes in this film are when the egg-white eyes start to come back into the sockets of the witch & when the evil Igor materializes on the painting behind Constantine. Creepy stuff, done with no computers.

Trivia: The innkeeper's young daughter who milks the cow is the second of three children of actor Arturo Dominici — the actor who came out of the grave wearing Satan's mask (Igor).

  4. Barbara Steele at Monsterpalooza walking thru the crowd is like seeing Royalty, just an amazing beautiful woman, and very approachable and appreciative , an elegant woman

  5. I saw this movie back in the mid 60s on TV. Never forgot it but couldn't remember the title. Last year came across it after looking up Barbara Steele. Saw her in an episode of Night Gallery, "The Sin Eater". Just a bit part, but she really has that creep factor about her. Creepiest woman in horror films! She's great!

  6. Here is another film based on the same story that inspired "Black Sunday". It is a Russian film called "Viy" and it follows the original story more closely: https://youtu.be/4YmQn6q36HQ?si=GqQYjNbOL_tsEFjk

It is very cool with lots of interesting effects and a light tone, almost comic. It has one of my favorite movie witches. It is only about 75 minutes and it is definitely worth watching.

  7. First time I saw her was this one. Young, intense..those eyes, man! No Hammer girl this; she carved her own niche in the genre. Terrific post, Ms. Mysterious. Thank you from Florida ????

  8. Definitely one of my favourite movies, I’ve seen it for the first time yesterday night and I’m obsessed !
But I can’t find the piano music played by Katia, can anyone help please ? ????????

  9. This is the first Barbara Steele film I've seen. She was great playing two separate roles, and she was so joyfully evil that performance was awesome. I love the introduction you gave and your anecdotes. It gave context and set the tone for the film, which I didn't know a lot about going into. Thanks for sharing!

  10. Me Encanta El Terror GĂłtico Y Sus PelĂculas Me Parecen Excelentes Pero Desgraciadamente, No Están En Español, las PodrĂan Al Menos Subtitular Al Español por Favor….Muchas Gracias ????????????

  11. Wasn't this movie also known as The Mask of Satan, and isn't John Richardson part of the huge English Richardson family of actors? I too have been a fan of Barbara Steele since she started, and she is the best! No wonder she walked away from the trash that still is Hollywood, land of the forever superhero remakes of Marvel and others. They ran out of talent about 50 years ago!
