CRIME MOVIE: Dressed to Kill (1946) aka Prelude to Murder | SHERLOCK HOLMES movie | mystery movies | Basil Rathbone | Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson | A convicted thief in Dartmoor prison hides the location of stolen Bank of England printing plates inside three music boxes (each of which plays a subtly different version of “The Swagman”). The boxes are sold at a local auction house.
The brain of the gang belongs to a darkly beautiful, ruthless woman, who is also a “consummate actress,” as Holmes learns. She disguises herself as a charwoman and speaking Cockney, insults and berates both Holmes and Watson, whom she pretends not to recognize, and leaves with a music box right under their noses. Holmes must recover the last music box to crack the secret code contained in the tune before it is too late.

When American newspaperman and adventurer Henry M. Stanley comes back from the western Indian wars, his editor James Gordon Bennett sends him to Africa to find Dr. David Livingstone, the missing Scottish missionary. Stanley finds Livingstone (“Dr. Livingstone, I presume.”) blissfully doling out medicine and religion to the happy natives. His story is at first disbelieved. When Livingstone later dies, Stanley returns to continue the good doctor’s work (which, of course, never really happened).

For anyone who likes classic Brit sitcoms of the ‘As Time Goes By’ type, this movie will leave you with lots of laughs and a feeling of bonhomie.

The larger than life James Robertson Justice, better known to fans of the ‘Doctor’ series of Richard Gordon book-derived movies, is always worth watching. He is one actor whose presence can keep a movie afloat no mater how bad the supporting cast. In this movie, he is ably supported by an excellent cast of English comedians, including the great Hugh Lloyd, Leslie Phillips, Ronnie Barker and so on.

Two urban youths Gopal (Prem Nath) and Pran (Raj Kapoor) with contrasting beliefs about love take their annual holiday in Kashmir. Both get attracted to local beauties Neela (Nimmi) and Reshma (Nargis) respectively. While Gopal is a philanderer, Pran is serious about his love for Reshma.
