Stanley and Livingstone (1939) Spencer Tracy, Walter Brennan, Nancy Kelly

When American newspaperman and adventurer Henry M. Stanley comes back from the western Indian wars, his editor James Gordon Bennett sends him to Africa to find Dr. David Livingstone, the missing Scottish missionary. Stanley finds Livingstone (“Dr. Livingstone, I presume.”) blissfully doling out medicine and religion to the happy natives. His story is at first disbelieved. When Livingstone later dies, Stanley returns to continue the good doctor’s work (which, of course, never really happened).

  1. Interestingly, Stanley was an Englishman who was born illegitimately in Wales, was in a workhouse, came toThe US in 1859, fought in the Confederate Army at Shiloh, was an journalist, explorer, author, politician and Colonial Administrator. ????

  2. What a great movie! They certainly don't make them like this anymore and there isn't actors like this anymore either. It's wonderful that at least we can still see these great works.

  3. ALWAYS such a rewarding film to watch… on so many levels… including this pristine film copy!! ?
Truly a sterling cast from A-to-Z, with Sir Cedric Hardwicke delivering a deeply moving performance, and with one of the unsung Beauties of American cinema, Nancy Kelly, adding a charming "perspective" on Stanley's life!!! Thanks Classic Studio = You definitely made my day!!!!! ?

  4. This movie shows classic movie and superb acting and it does have the explicit sex foul language. The movies of today's Hollywood are crass filled with explicit sexual scenes and poor acting not one actor or actress today has the talent to match the likes of Clark Gable Leslie Howard Paul Newman Elizabeth Taylor Richard Burton.John Wayne John Ethel.andl.Lional. Barrymore Csty Grant rom name a few. Roduccers and directors Such as John Houston Cecil B DeMill to name a few of top notch talented Hollywood the movies of the 30s 40s 50s and early 60s movies such as Casablanca Gone With The Wind Leslie Howard's original Pygmalion San Francisco and numerous others too many to name here and compare the original movie remade today you can see both the quality of acting the foul language added and explicit sexual scenes

  5. Star-studded cast delivers! Tracy, as always, is excellent. His concluding speech was to become a hallmark of his career, particularly his later films: "Judgement At Nuremberg", "Inherit The Wind", "Guess Whos Coming To Dinner".

  6. Historical, boring, drags slow and stupidity plays "Suzanna dont your cry" as they march through Africa? Stupid music directory – sorry worth skipping.

  7. This is one of a fiew really good movies Spencer,s speech was memoriable like the speech of Gregory Peck in Killing a Mockingbird. This film is worthy to watch it more than only one time.Thank you for the very good quality.

  8. This is one of my very most favorite movies. I saw a copy that was terribly  chopped up out of focus and difficult to see the picture. So with much THANKS and GRATITUDE  I am grateful to see this in such fine condition. I Highly recommend this to anyone wanting a really good movie. Well Worth the time.

  9. Got to love the sheer scale of Western arrogance–a hundred thousand years after they left Africa, pigment-mutated descendants return to "discover" and name lakes and rivers where their cousins have been living all along. And then there's the matter of what a civilizing influence those same white boys have been–King Leopold of Belgium immediately springs to mind, as he surely cut more hands off the slaves who toiled and died for him than anyone else…although many others do keep trying to top that achievement to this day. Love that Spencer Tracy, but what an incredible indictment this old movie is! Makes you wonder just how much we've changed in the last 80 years, especially now that the Nazis are threatening the world again, just as they were then…
