  1. A superior western with Jeff Chandler doing his best Titus Oates impression with Joseph Cotten and Cornel Wilde and features a lot of noirish elements to make it enjoyable for those uninitiated in the ways of the American Civil War though one thing does baffle me if the south didn’t win the war why are a lot of lead characters in westerns from the south?

  2. 1:09:17 1200 or 1500 (!) Apache warriors ?
I doubt any tribe of Apache numbered more than 2 or 3 thousand people. It's hardly improbable that any Apache chief could've mustered more than a few hundred warriors at any one time.

  3. !!LINDA DARNELL!!!….One of the most iconic beauties to ever grace Hollywood. She shines like the Sun in every movie she took part in. Tragically, She died in a terrible Fire in 1965. A good tight well written movie with excellent cast and acting.

  4. @1:26:24 Scared that living daylights out of me! that part was like a Horror Movie scene didn't expect that, i thought they were just going do what Jeff Chandler The (Major) did to the Chief son! they went a whole another level with that one!!!

  5. It took me a while to start disliking this film, but then there was no turning back. It was the usual pro-South drivel, with all honorable and heroic Confederates and the sadistic Unionist.

The gratuitous murder of a "scrawny son of a savage" is never seen as a reprehensible crime by the Americans, it just bothers them that Indians act upon it. That's downright outrageous. Don't expect audience to be sorry when the fort is attacked! It's a pity Linda Darnell wasted her luminous face in this. It's probably Robert Wise's worst film, too.
