The Fighting Lady (1944) – USS Yorktown – Robert Taylor | Edward Steichen – FULL MOVIE

American documentary & propaganda film produced by the U.S. Navy during World War II and narrated by Lt. Robert Taylor USNR.

The plot of the film revolves around the life of seamen on board an anonymous aircraft carrier. Because of war time restrictions, the name of the aircraft carrier was disguised as “the Fighting Lady”; afterwards the ship’s true name became public — she was the USS Yorktown. A few shots of aircraft landing were filmed aboard USS Ticonderoga. Due to her fighting heritage, and to honor all carrier sailors and airmen, the Yorktown is on permanent display at Patriots Point in Charleston, SC.

In the scene of a strafing mission against the Japanese-held island of Truk, one of the figures seen running for cover is an American POW. According to his autobiography, that prisoner was Maj. Gregory H. ‘Pappy’ Boyington, the highest-scoring U.S. Marine pilot of the war, who had been shot down a few months before in the Solomon Islands.

  1. My Father was part of the Turkey Shoot. He was on the USS Boise CL 46 throughout the war 11 Battle Stars, almost sunk at the 'Canal. Sent to Brooklyn for repairs, then to Italy invasion, back to Pacific. He joined Dec 8, 41 and discharge Feb 46. He was the ship's tailor and gun hoist operator. He never left the Navy. I followed in '68 and retired in 2003. From HA to HMCS, to Warrent 3 to LT NC

  2. It blows my mind the organizational skill that Built this flat top, trained the crew, combined the skill of the pilots, and make it work as a cohesive fighting force. Truly amazing. God bless!

  3. What a waste of lives and money war is….and all those planes and metal dumped into the ocean…..and people today are worried about………STRAWS!?!?

  4. // Brave Americans …The Japanese Picked On The Wrong Enemy….Pay Back For The 2040 Americans Killed At Pearl Harbour In The Sneaky Unprovoked Attack. !!

  5. Great movie. Gives us an idea what war on a carrier is really like! And the Japanese deserved everything they got after the cowardly attack on Pearl Harbour! Likewise the Arabs who attacked the Twin Towers deserve to get what's coming to them! I'm a Brit ?? and glad we're on ?? USA's side!

  6. To call this propaganda is so dumb, foolish, warped. There is a thing called empathy, the ability to put yourself in some others persons situation. How would you feel, what would you do? Now put yourself in the place of a seven year old girl your daddy is gone, you have,t seen him for two years. You know he is off defending every one against those horrible people who blew up all those people in a place you never heard of before. Some times you you get letters from him and he tells you how much he loves you but he never tells you where he is and what he is doing. One day you and your sister go to the movie and this is playing. Then some one calls it propaganda that is like calling it fake and your daddy is a fake. How would you like that?

  7. God bless all our Military men & women past and present. They were and are the very BEST OF THE BEST.?????? There's many reasons I love Robert Taylor, this is only just one of them.

  8. 1/31/2018 My Navy pilot relative Tom Provost of the USS Enterprise VF-6 CAP was sent with 5 other planes to help defend the Yorktown in June 1942. The Yorktown was under fire and hardly any planes. Provost had to travel 100 miles to the site. The Japanese leader was Kobayashi.

My relative Thomas Clinton Provost and James Alex Halford shot down Koybayashi as the Japanese left the area. The Yorktown was doomed to fire. Provost and Halford survived the war.

  9. 24:36 Japanese ZERO had the advantage until American planes were developed that exceeded the ZERO's capabilities. Up to that moment the Americans were nailed hard.
37:16 ''Our ocean, our air'' Well no, international law says a country only possesses that sea around their nation, not oceans.
Imperialistic arrogance or the excitement of propaganda? Consider that comment in the light of contemporary affairs, that is, America's posture today.

  10. If you do not like these WW 2 movies, then get the hell out. We don't need any political comments; rather if you don't like them, why don't you take a knee and shut your mouth.

  11. Yes knock it off calling every WWII film propaganda. Its disrespectful and untrue. Anybody remember WE were viciously bombed at Pearl Harbor???
