  1. This movie is actually pretty true to form for Todd. Most people don't know that Miss Todd was pimped out by a jewish fella who was hooked in with the Bug and Meyer gang outta the Lower East Side of New York City to Jewish men like Goldwyn and others. This is how she came to know Luciano and bunch. She was basically passed around from gangster to gangster up until her death and they never had respect for her because to them she was a tramp that they found on the tenement streets of the Five Points area/Lower East Side and gave her her "chance" at fame although she was basically just a famous whore in a sense as they got the lions share of the money she made.

  2. This is a really good film, maybe not among the greats, but is well directed and interesting.  Both the leads had tragic lives.  Twelvetrees committed suicide at 50 and Holmes died seeing action in WW2.  Todd's mysterious death is of course well documented.  Tay Garnett, the director, also directed "The Postman Always Rings Twice," probably his greatest film.  Twelvetrees is always interesting and played this kind of role to perfection, that of the put upon gal who tries her best to get through life in spite of all the men who have used her to their advantage.  Definitely worth a look.  For a long time, I thought this film was lost and I'm so glad it is available for us to see.  Thank you so much!

  3. Helen Twelvetrees had a genuine break out part in this film.  She was cute vivacious and capable.  She died young at 50.  this film is not tight in the story department but the acting was wonderful. Perhaps you noticed Marjorie Rambeau?  Lovely little film.

  4. The Code was introduced in 1930, but not really followed until 1934.
When the Code's seal of approval came on at the start of a film, the audience booed.

  5. thanks for posting this pre-code winner.
like many similar movies, the main story isn't that important.
the supporting actors who steal the show, they are the real stars. this time it's Harry Sweet and especially James Gleason. they are extremely funny.
    some unforgettable moments –>
22:43 –> one against two, how's it gonna end? 🙂
32:05 –> 20 bucks skimmer! look at their faces! 🙂
    45:08 –> "you th-th-through? yes I'm th-th-th-th-through" 🙂
    51:08 –> keep drowning, it's the hat he's after! 🙂
and easily the best scene –>
    52:08 :)))

  6. Sometimes, the best movies are not always Academy Award winners or exciting/comical "A" pictures. Some are "B" movies, including classic Pre-Code movies of the late 20's and early 30's. This film is an example of it. Maybe it's because I like those films so much in spite of the slow speaking parts that were geared for those early talkies, enabling those audiences to hear everything word for word. I just see them as classics…:-)
