Sonia Dresdel (1909 – 1976) who plays Steffy Millington began her career on stage in 1942 in the lead role of Ibsen's Hedda Gabbler and it was an appearance that won her instant fame and she became one of the leading English stage actresses of her era. She achieved the same fame for her second film in 1947, While I Live and appeared destined for a glittering career. She appeared in many films and later moved to TV roles but, sadly, she never really was offered many roles that could have demonstrated her undoubted talent and when she died, aged only 66 of "undisclosed causes" (possibly suicide) she was very largely forgotten.
