  1. Ida Lupino was born in and a citizen of Great Britain. Hence she was Italian-British. Lupino is her real name. She might have come to America prior to this movie but i doubt it. She was one of the first females in hollywood to "call her own shots", make or break a contract, set up a production company, and one of the first women to direct feature films. Later she would be involved in producing and directing many tv programs. She was a very independent and successful woman. One of my favorite films of her acting was called "On Dangerous Ground". She plays a blind woman.

  2. I love the close up of Emily when she's blown the candles out. The lightening strikes and Elsa Lanchester is once again Bride Of Frankenstein. It had to have been purposely done. It had to be. Ida Lupino is one of the greats.

  3. Poor Miss Fisk, invaded by a whole family of insane leeches latching onto her and taking full advantage of the woman and her home as though they have every right. Excellent melodrama. ?

  4. Amazing storyline and pretty much perfect casting. She should have pitched a tent somewhere for those sisters or put them in a deserted castle somewhere and brought them food from time to time. lol Anything but what she did.

  5. Crimis don't usually hold my attention unless they're comi-crimis – This one stands out ! Ida, of course, is the greatest reason for that – But everyone else plays well in this one too – Well cast, well shot, great sets ! Had me wondering what she'd do about the brat kid !

  6. “Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you” (John 15:16).

  7. Actresses back in the day used to bebeautiful (Hedy Lamarr, Ava Gardner, Ingrid Bergman, Dorothy Dandrige. Yep there was also scandal but modern technology has taken being a celebrity to a newlow.

  8. This film was remade & called "The Mad Room". Stella Stevens played the Lupino role and Shelley Winters played the employer. The siblings were teenagers, a boy & girl. Another change was the siblings as young children were accused of killing their parents. Placed in an asylum they were deemed sane yrs later & released to their sister who hid them in Winter's home. The siblings tell their sister they need a mad room. At the assylum it was a room to release the anger/madness that made them kill all those yrs ago. When Winters find out their secret  past she threatens to call the police. But Stevens snaps & kills   her. There is a twist in this version. (SPOILER) After Stevens kills she has to keep lying to so many people she cracks up and kills again & is found covered in blood. Turns out Stevens is the real killer of her  parents. She killed them  with an axe after her father burned all her toys in the fireplace because they had no firewood for heat. She told the police her siblings did it after she put them in the room with the bodies & the weapon.

  9. Emma Thompson .Julie Walters Helena Bonham Carter, Kate Beckinsale, The amazing Rosamund Pike, Justin Waddle, Gillian Anderson, Colin Firth to name but a few great actors these days

  10. who in the world but perhaps family, or saints, would be ab
le or willing to pu up with the sisters.
the sister with the bird hat reminds me of the scottish secretary in absolutely fabulous.

  11. Well said they don't make em like they used too…all special effects and no story nowadays. Our actors are too concerned with being bad politicians than acting! I always feel bad for Miss Fisk because she wAs so nice too Ellen for being a 19th century employer and all!

  12. I am very much enjoying this movie! I like Ida Lupino a lot, and I think this is the youngest (and most beautiful!) I have seen her.
One place I found the editing so poorly done as to be distracting: At 1:27:44, Lucy has a strong, determined,, almost angry look on her face. There there is a cut and at 1:27:46 her looks change instantly to frightened and cowering.
Still, an excellent movie. Thank you to the uploader.
