  1. The Murder of the very beautiful Vivien Leigh type @ 59:55 is a cinematic work of Art, one of the most chilling murders in Cinema, the whole movie is a masterpiece and Dorothy McGuire deserved an Oscar, was she even nominated?

  2. Could you ask for anything more? Classic movie, gothic atmosphere, great soundtrack and Dorothy MacGuire giving a virtuoso performance without saying a word till literally the last minute. šŸ‘

  3. I didnā€™t understand Ethel Barrymoreā€™s well story. She saw a murderā€¦.Someone threw a girl in the wellā€¦and that girl was Helen? Did anyone understand it? If so, please explain. Thanks!

  4. Wowow that was an excellent excellent movie! Thanks so much for sharing I thought I had seen all the old drama thrillers, but this one beats any of the new ones!šŸ‘

  5. Watched it as a kid with my Mom. We had bulldogs so we liked seeing one in the movie. Not a big fan of Dorothy McGuire. She looked old even as a young woman. Was the mom on Rich Man, Poor Man.

  6. Absolutely love this movie. Dorothys' performance is spectacular, the whole cast is top notch!!! Nice to have the bejeepers subtly scared out of mešŸ˜² So refreshing they didn't need chainsaws & other gore back in the day to create atmosphere Two thumbs up, they don't make em like they used to. It's amazing how the music is sooo perfect

  7. This is the only movie based on a book where i actually think the movie is better. The book is entertaining but this movie has so much talent from the makers to the actors. Definitely in my top ten even though it was made 40 years before i 2as born.

  8. I was 5 years old when my mother took me to see this film during its initial run at a movie house in Columbus OH. I especially recall because it was a daylong treat. I accompanied mom to her beauty parlor where she got her done while I watched that quintessentially feminine ritual. Then to lunch at a restaurant (a special occasion for her youthful "escort") and then on to the cinema.

It believe it was my first trip to a theatre but to this day I recall the magic of that vast silver screen suffused with what seemed to me silver rain (the nitrate celluloid stock effect). I particularly recall a close up of the heroine's face minus a mouth (as seen by her deranged stalker) and to this day it remains graven in my visual memory as exemplary of the power of movie-making.

In all a perfect introduction to the art of of Hollywood at its absolute peak! I'm not saying it was the greatest film I've seen over the 75+ years since, but as a first experience it was more than memorable
