Hangmen Also Die! is a 1943 noir war film directed by the Austrian director Fritz Lang and written by John Wexley from a story by Bertolt Brecht (credited as Bert Brecht) and Lang. The film stars Hans Heinrich von Twardowski, Brian Donlevy, Walter Brennan, Alexander Granach and Anna Lee, and features Gene Lockhart and Dennis O’Keefe. Hanns Eisler composed the score, being nominated for an Academy Award, and the cinematographer was James Wong Howe.
The film is loosely based on the 1942 assassination of Reinhard Heydrich, the Nazi Reich Protector of German-occupied Prague, number-two man in the SS, and a chief mastermind of the Holocaust, who was known as “The Hangman of Prague.” The real Heydrich was assassinated by Czech resistance fighters parachuted from a British plane in Operation Anthropoid, but in the film, which was made during World War II before the full story had become public knowledge, Heydrich’s killer is depicted as a member of the Czech resistance with ties to the Communist Party.

Please get rid of the big pink squares about other films that cover the last frames of the movie. They destroy the ending of the movie. Because of them, I will not be watching anymore films on your channel if they appear again.

But Heydrich was killed by a bomb the guy who had the Bren gun it did not go off the other guy threw a bomb in his car and it blew up in his back he lived and was driven to hospital and lived for a week his kidneys were not working and he died of that poison in his blood, Himmler was quite happy he was gone!

The ending was cut, …..Chakka was let go by the Gestapo in the car,….and as he walked away he was shot in the back by someone…..(underground or Gestapo?).

The true story is much different. The 2 czech oss agents were shot and killed shortly after Heidrichs car was bombed. Heidrich died from infection in his spleen from a piece of the horsehair upholstery in the blown up back seat

The story line is fairly original, and the photography at times is impressive. But some of the acting is way over the top, which keeps it from moving beyond the level of just another shrill melodrama. And the German characters are ridiculously cliched. Hello, Central Casting? Send over a dozen evil Gestapo agents. Talent not required.
I don't think anyone can truly grasp the brutality of what German Nazis did. We know what they did. We know they killed millions. But the atrocities and wanton murders can never be repaid. They are lucky they weren't nuked like Hiroshima.

Great movie made well before anyone (outside the British/Czech intelligence) knew how it was done. They were obviously wrong but the movie works as a great propaganda film against Nazism. Gene Lockheart ( the Judge on Miracle on 34th Street) does a great job as a collaborator!
This is an excellent movie made in 1943 about the assassination of the butcher of Prague, Reinhard Heydrich and how the Nazis flipped out. The Nazis are disgusting animals who are easy to hate. This movie is superbly done and is incredibly intense. It was very hard for the Czechs to survive and fight these swines.

Lots of implausibilities and way-too lucky breaks, but it sure kept my attention from the first frame to the last.
