A Star Is Born is a 1937 American Technicolor romantic drama film produced by David O. Selznick and directed by William A. Wellman, with a script by Wellman, Robert Carson, Dorothy Parker and Alan Campbell. It stars Janet Gaynor as an aspiring Hollywood actress, and Fredric March as an aging movie star who helps launch her career. Other members of the cast include Adolphe Menjou, May Robson, Andy Devine, and Lionel Stander.
Contemporary reviews were very positive. Frank S. Nugent of The New York Times called the film “one of the year’s best shows” as well as “good entertainment by any standards, including the artistic, and convincing proof that Hollywood need not travel to Ruritania for its plots; there is drama aplenty in its own backyard.”
At the 10th Academy Awards, A Star is Born was nominated in seven categories, winning in one. Wellman won the award for original story, the only Oscar he was to win during his career. W. Howard Greene received an honorary Academy Award for the film’s color photography; this award was recommended by a committee of leading cinematographers after viewing all the color pictures made during the year.

Best version. By a mile.
Fantastic movie. The real subject is Hollywood, and how it tries to destroy peoples' lives. Janet Gaynor is wonderful, but the picture belongs to Fredric March, who plays a rather unattractive figure–it's hard to like an alcoholic–and makes you care about him.
nice movie . good watching .
The most depressing job in the world would be to be “famous”! To be used and abused, propped up by “fans” UNTIL you are no longer “it”! No wonder so many are drug addicts, alcoholics and commit suicide. It’s so tragic! Who would really want that life? ????
Great story line and superb acting! I'm so sad though, that it seemed to end with him taking his life. But even so, the fact that she stayed the course, "for better or worse" is still a vital message today!
The original of this movie is the best.
✌????
22 years after this masterpiece was made, Bollywood remake, Kagaz Ke Phool was released in 1959 where it has become a cult classic since. The irony is that the director of that movie kills himself in real life.
I swear that Lionel Stander looked and sounded EXACTLY the same when he played Max on "Hart to Hart" decades later. ""This is Mrs. Hart. She's GAWJIS."
THANK YOU SM FOR POSTING
Best version- and acting of all the remakes. Originals are the best!
What brought me here was an episode of the Twilight Zone/Hocus Pocus and Frisby.Actor Andy Devine looked very young here.
Un très beau rôle pour Fredric MARCH … un grand tragédien …
came here after watching the remake very beautiful movie

Let's appreciate the fact that Norman never got jealous of Ester's popularity. This shows how seriously and deeply he loved her.
"Tragedy is a test of courage," according to Granny. Wow! Profound line!

(spoiler alert)
my gosh this movie is wonderful. what makes it hit me so hard is how subtle it is — there’s lots of little funny moments and humor sprinkled in, and scenes where we can get attached to esther and norman. the fact that esther’s sadness is so understated for most of the film towards the scene where she breaks down just before the end is gut-wrenching. you know even though she’s trying to keep calm she’s probably a lot more upset and distressed than she lets on.
there are two scenes that made me cry the most in this movie. the first is the very obvious “one more look” scene. i know what’s coming, and the worst part is that there was a chance that everything would be alright. it’s just so subtle and calm, a scene that is very discreet and doesn’t directly show norman committing suicide. the second is the ending. it’s a combination of both sad and sweet — this is the part that made me cry so hard i choked on pasta (note: please don’t try eating dinner and watching sad movies.)
wow that was a whole lot of rambling. but this is a movie that really just broke me and i need to yell about that into the comments section.
You have to try it now !!!!

Random fact this was released before the 2nd world war
I'm here because I thought the Judy Garland James Mason version was the first, and hated the Kris Kristopherson Barbara Streisand version and LOATHED the Lady Gagy version… and then someone said, 'you know, there's and earlier version.' So here I am.
The originals are always the best!
Grandma’s pep talk number 2 at 1:45 an added bonus sets up the finale. Nice.
Came here to see Grandma’s pep talk, first 10 minutes. Parting scene at train station just wonderful.

I love the old movies so much more!????
I didn't realize people were so cruel back then. Hopefully, they really didn't talk like that. Classic 30's BULLY story. Was anyone else appalled at how these people acted? Makes me sad…what a flippin mess.
Beautiful. A must watch.

How can people forget his name so fast? He was so depressed…
"They even have iron bars in the windows to keep out the draft"
Ever since I saw this movie a year or two ago, I've always wanted to strangle the Lionel Stander character. He was cruel to the husband, no matter what happened to him. Sure, the husband was a drunk who ruined his own life, but the Stander character was a cold-blooded jerk! I love to hate him.
