Yellow Sky, Gregory Peck, Richard Widmark 1948 HD 1080p

I was 14 in 1948. I loved Westerns. In this one you get a ghost town to boot. This is a really sharp print. Upgraded from DVD to blu ray quality. It took 8 hours to process.

A pistol-packing tomboy Ann Baxter) and her grandfather discover a band of bank robbing bandits taking refuge in the neighboring ghost town.

Made roughly at the time of release of the more highly acclaimed “The Treasure of the Sierra Madre,” Yellow Sky never got the attention as ‘Treasure…’ did. In fact, for the most part it has been ignored completely, and wrongfully so. Brilliantly directed by William Wellman, along with very honest camera angles. We see all sides of the actors, not just their supposed “good sides”. The cast, including Gregory Peck, Anne Baxter and Richard Widmark, all come together perfectly in highly unique fashion, and that includes everyone from Peck and Baxter all the way down to Charles Kemper and John Russell. The plot, like ‘Treasure…’ is about the greed for gold and the central characters’ inability to trust one another because of it. Yet Yellow Sky somehow adds more to the equation, in my opinion. To me, the characters have, if not more depth, more identifiable depth for sure. The real standout, though, if there is one, is Baxter as ‘Mike’. There are times in this film that she doesn’t say a word and yet you can tell exactly what Mike is thinking or feeling at the time. The character’s innocent confusion on what to do, what not to do, what to let happen and what not to let happen is extraordinarily acted. Emotions as intense as this portrayed successfully on screen is one of the main reasons I love films as much as I do. This is not to say, however, that there is any over-dramaticism in this film. There isn’t any at all, and Yellow Sky is all the better for it. The Score, what there is of it, is magnificent in itself. First we hear a main theme at the startup, then nothing until the middle of the film when we hear a more romantic theme. First sung by Charles Kemper’s ‘Walrus’, then on a harmonica, and later on in full musical form. It is rather subtle and not loudly played, but again, that’s one of the many beauties of this film, nothing is overdone.

  1. Even though this film is based on violent crime and injustice throughout
For some strange reason I tell enjoy it every time I watch it
    ????????????????????????

  2. Thank you. I only discovered this film recently, after reading about Widmark's career. The film is visually as strong as it was claimed to be. The Alfred Newman music was re-used from another film he scored. Baxter was a very talented actress. I guess we know how both Peck's and Widmark's characters will pan out based on their casting, but it's always a pleasure to watch both actors.

  3. Thank "Wild" William Wellman. Beautifully shot and directed. Well executed vehicle. Lamar Trotti screenplay W.R. Burnett story Alfred Newman Cinematography Joe MacDonald Editing Harmon Jones Art Direction Albert Hogsett, Lyle Wheeler. Loved the shirtless pec-fest between Gregory Peck and John Russell. Gregory Peck topless. 4 stars. All the players shine thanks to Wellman. A simple compelling story. Anne Baxter's early work excellent.

  4. Thanks for giving a chance to see this precious old, yet great movie. Video quality, audio quality, and the contents are all great beyond expectation.

  5. I thought I'd seen every great western there was to see…then I stumbled across this gem that I somehow missed as kid growing up… WOW… classic western tale!!! Peck Widmark and Baxter…

  7. In the mid nineties when I was working in Hollywood as an actor/screenwriter, I sent Gregory Peck a letter when he was in the hospital having surgery on the ankle he hurt on "Yellow Sky". Much to my surprise, he responded and told me his favorite scene in the film is when he gives Ann Baxter the hat at the end, and half shakes his head in approval… Peck is a very classy guy, and an enormous talent..

  8. I HATE THIS MOVIE CAUSE I ALWAYS THOUGHT OF GREGORY PECK PLAYING A GOOD GUY, HERE HE IS A BAD MAN AND NOW I TRULY HATE HIM & I WISHED I NEVER SAW THIS MOVIE. AND HE BELIEVES WHAT HIS COWARD BUNCH HAVE TO SAY. 9. Thanks SO MUCH for posting this! Haven't seen this one. Great cast. May I ask what software you used to up-convert it?

Just watched it. Awesome movie! Great character study. Very modern in it's style. The lack of music until the very end was a very brave and unusual choice for the 1940's. Movies from that era normally had constant music, sounding almost operatic. The lack of music also added a stillness and a realism not seen in movies until decades later. No Country for Old Men, for example.

Thanks again for posting (and up-converting) it. : )

  10. Potrebna ženska, lahko prinese nesrečo vsej družini. Včasih je koristno priznati, da je sovražnik pametnejši od nas… Alterius ingenia uti.

  11. Thanks a million bunch. I was born in the mid-70s, and I am a movie buff, westerns one of my favourite Genre too. So thankful to you for bringing this for us to watch.

  12. Yellow Sky has aged well and this cut is beautiful and sharp. I haven't seen it in 35 years. John Russell was in so many westerns, his second to last movie was The Pale Rider with Eastwood.. Thank you for putting out this great movie.54
