  1. 32 minutes in, mose says, “he was sentenced to 15 years for making love to the constable’s daughter when she didn’t want any. do you think he was bad?”

    "well, he was guilty."

"sure, but at first he was lonesome. well, i think he got 15 years for being lonesome."

and EVERYONE on youtube just passes over one of the character who acts as the film’s (& society’s?) conscience’s easy dismal of violent rape?!!

    really, this didn’t bother anyone?!!!!!!!

inside such “a wonderful film”?!!! a “profound,”and “deep.” film etc.

    good god.

  2. In the UK, these classics and film noir (I don't count this as film noir) like On Dangerous Ground, Narrow Margin, Beware My Lovely and The Window would always be on TV in time for Christmas and the holiday up until the early 2000s.

They'd often show them in the afternoon.

Growing up, they were windows to a magical era and sparkled off the screen black and white. I even remember the sound of them playing coming into the room when it was cold outside but with a fire indoors.

They're still as magical every time I revisit them. Like a comfortable blanket, there's something I can't quite explain about how they engross me every time.

Sometimes I think we don't appreciate the magic of cinema.

  3. Yes, the opening scenes are truly spellbinding, but to my mind the "Ferris wheel scene" is not only the acme of Borzage's remarkable career as a filmmaker but also one of the most miraculous instances of creative power in Cinema History.
The fact that this absolute masterpiece has been ignored by critics and film schools alike for decades — I guess they are too busy studying the profound influence of Wittgenstein’s philososophical system on Michael Bay's oeuvre — provides another good example of the sorrowful state of a moribund art form, wich at least deserved a finer, more respectul burial.

  4. Enjoy Dane Clark in everything I've seen him do. He was a one-woman man~ widowed in 1970, and remarried a year later till he died in 1998. He was made for film noir!

  5. A wonderful and very powerful film. Am I the only one who sees Karl Malden on the left side of the screen looking at the gallows as Danny's father is executed at the beginning of the film? It's not in Malden's filmography, but it is absolutely him.

  6. I've read Eddie Muller's "Dark City" and he wrote it was a good Noir movie. I never saw it on TV ( believe it or not) and I must admit it was great!

  7. The hip bartender serving coffee was ahead of his time, trapped in a wrong decade.  How can I not comment on the obvious ??‍♀️?  Gail Russell was an absolute beauty ????? ?!!!

  8. Esse filme parece ser bom, pena que não é dublado ou legendados em português. Não consigo entender nada mas se você conseguir vou me inscrever imediatamente. Obrigado pela atenção e vou ficar esperando.

  9. Leaving aside Danny's father's fate, if the motivation for killing Jerry was real honest to goodness competition for the girl, it's not that immoral a murder.

I just thought of the Vedic custom of times past where a fight was customary between suitors. Who got to marry was the winner, and the red line in the part of the bride's hair was decorated with the loser's vermillion blood, and the dot of the forehead as well. The girl felt proud of her new victorious husband, and society accepted the union.

People can't understand. They simply criticise and misunderstand morality.
They take truth as lies, and lies as truth.
