Well, I tried to watch it…but I must say that in general, even at age 79, I prefer the modern Sherlock Holmes, Benedict Cumberbatch. I saw all of these of course when they were running on our television in the 50s, and enjoyed them then…now, not so much. Thanks, though for an enjoyable if brief moment.
All those standing up for Jeremy Brett as the best Sherlock Holmes overlook two pivotal aspects pertaining to Holmes physical appearance and personality ; first no other than RATHBONE is so close to the Holmes figure as sketched by non other than Doyle himself and second Brett'assumption of Holmes' character ,brilliant as it is , borders unmistakably on a Gothic version which is NOT what Doyle meant for his hero ; Holmes is supposed to be impressively stolid ,unusually deductive and unerringly sombre but NOT intimidating as Brett's Holmes is ; these two aspects is where Brett's Holmes loses to Rathbone''s ; certainly Rathbone and Brett were the most convincing Holmes yet Rathbone's version outplays Brett's on the above two grounds.
I love the end of these movies when Holmes waxes poetic and they play that noble music. This is the Holmes movie that scared me the most as a child..that scene with "Nora" and the judge!
This is widely considered the best of the series by both fans and critics alike. Let's not forget that in addition to the great acting of Rathbone and Bruce that the series owes its atmospheric& psychological success to director Roy William Neill who directed 10 of the movies . One would never know these were B films— so stylishly did he direct them.
Of the 1939 series of Sherlock Holmes movies starring Mr. Rathbone this one ranks number 1.
This was one of their better cases and certainly kept me going as to the motive. Some of the atmospheres were perfect "Holmes".
watching subsequent (where did the subs go) VIEWS knowing its the postman makes it pretty freaky//hehhehehehe
great movie
war is hell -hell is emminent…ooo..lol..
WATSON – BORN IDIOT!
I think I may have been born in the wrong time lol but I love these movies basil is Holmes this one the scarlet claw is my favorite movie of all time not just of these movies my favorite movie period
The Holmes and Watson in this series are different from the stories of Conan Doyle because most of them are not his stories and are set in the present. I can enjoy them as well as most of the other portrayals of the pair but my favorite is the Granada series with Jeremy Brett. This movie is my favorite of the Rathbone portrayals.
These films just make me feel good all over.
Well what can i say to do these two incredible actors justice. Because they can't be beaten. The old black and whites can never be matched classic
What a wierd one ! Delicious all the same. Much appreciated by those like fans like me in social isolation. Stay apart!

I love these series
Holmes and Watson are definitely married.
Strange that a brilliant detective like Holmes didn't notice that no one seemed to speak French or have a French accent.
As far as atmosphere goes one could not ever hope to match the Rathbone movies.
poor Marie
Best Sherlock Holmes ever Basil Rathbone
No volume
Too many damn ads! And at the worst times!
lol You can't shoot someone for wearing a glow in the dark suit Sherlock
Pas Quebec no francais strange to see a British Quebec but love rathbone and Watson.
The theme of this movie seems to be that Holmes is a liar. 1st: he expects Journet' to explain why the garden weeder is there, when he's the one who brought it there. 2nd: he said that he had taken it away quite by accident. 3rd: he told Watson he wanted to get a good night's rest. 4th: he said he was baffled by where Journet 'could be and then claimed to know where Journet' was hiding and the judge's clock chimes only confirmed it. What else?
Lord Primrose is also featured in The House of Fear.
Were these tv movies or featured on the silver screen?
Guys making movies about Creepy Guys for guys. Thankfully that changed over time—sort of.🤷🏼♀️

The late Jeremy Brett did Basil Rathbone"s Holmes so well.
Watching these wonderful gems and reading comments by people who can spell, Is such a treat! I've watched much newer programming and trying to make sense of the posts makes ones eyes cross! I've not read anything against these two fine actors. Perhaps it's true that Watson wasn't supposed to be simple, But I truly don't view his character this way. He has his own input and opinions and Sherlock respects him and thanks him. I absolutely adore Nigel and his flawless performance. If its not Basil and Nigel, Its not Sherlock and Watson!
Watson cracks me up lol
The original and best Holmes and a Watson.. classic..💯
Uncle Forry sent me!
