Rain – 1932 – Joan Crawford – Full Movie

Joan Crawford and Walter Huston give powerful performances in this drama directed by Lewis Milestone. Controversial for its time, the film tells the story of prostitute Sadie Thompson and the lustful preacher who tries to ‘save her’ when their ship makes an unscheduled stop over on the South Sea island of Pago Pago.

  1. This movie really shows the "holier than thou" attitude of some religious people. They insinuate themselves into your business as if they have a special duty to shame you. I don't approve of that mindset. They seem brainwashed, and like cult followers. Enjoying what hurt they can cause people who live differently. Then wonder why they aren't well thought of by everyone. Wanting to help is a good thing. But they should have enough humility to ask themselves at a point, if their way of living is so much better than everyone elses. Or if they are just forcing their personal opinions and preferences down other peoples throats.

  2. i saw this film first on public tv back in the 70s when i was a kid! i  hated walter huston so much i could never watch him in  another film without thinking of him as this mean lustful hypocrite! it did however turn me on to somerset maugham, joan crawford and precode films! thanks public tv!

  3. This shows you how good (or bad) movies were pre-code. I consider it one of Joan's best roles. A silent star who was known for her dancing and proved here that she was much more than that.

  4. I 've read how much Joan always hated this film because it was so badly panned on it's release.  She never got over it.  Her performance was wonderful and ahead of it's time.  I love this film.  Hard to understand how critics could have been so wrong.

  5. I'm from a christian background. I can't believe some of the comments here. This doesn't resemble Christianity. It is a freakish cult leader with no compassion that turned Joan into a zombie.  Jesus was a compassionate trailblazer with inclusion of  children and empowerment of women…another reason he was killed by religious leaders. They couldn't stand him. Newsflash. This is only a movie. (The Simpsons and Flintstones aren't real either)

  6. Our  pious Pastor gladly gave his life for Sadie.

Wildly bursting with a rock hard determination , he hungrily  hammered our dear, sweet Sadie deeply and forcefully in his throbbing desire to fill her with his salvation until she was overflowing with every last drop of his Holy Spirit.

But alas, she drained him dry.

  7. I think critics slammed this for many reasons, for one Crawford was not offered tough roles in this early stage of her career at MGM, she generally played a shop girl, one who sang and danced and light comedies and of course love stories, so I personally think that it was not her, I think the critics just did not take her seriously enough, and also I think the two ladies in this film bog some of this film down, they are horrible actresses, but I over look it due to my love for Miss Joan, because she does so well in this film

  8. love "pre-code" movies….what a ride.!!!…and Crawford's face !!! the "bad one"… the… "good one"
..unforgettable….still get the chills…and was she the most beautiful woman of her time?
great acting as well. those "good christians"….bunch of…when people use religions ..world curse!

  9. this is why I hate religion I believe in god and everything else watch trailer my heart but when churches like this put people down because they are different and got no time for us god help us all they say religion is a savior but sometimes it is not it causes a lot of trouble between people and causes wars between countries

  10. I was brought up with the Bible I went to so many different churches to learn about their teaching of the Bible I had no choice in the matter do as I was told not what I want to do I do go to outside gathering church I was Bible bashed hey when you get Bible bashed you don't like it too much so I believe in my heart and I leave it as that if people cannot read what I have read without full stops and commas you call it punctuation

  11. I don't know why they panned this movie. I think the acting is pretty good. I guess folks got used to Joan Crawford, the shopgirl. I applaud her for breaking type and some great tense moments.

  12. It's The Queen OF Reinvention in one of her "signature" roles! I had never seen this before but I had heard of the Sadie Thompson character and that first appearance is WILD……..BOYS! (The best posting of this film on YouTube!)

  13. BTW what's the deal with the confrontation scene between Davidson and Sadie, where one minute she's righteously chewing his ass out, and the next she's chanting the Our Father with him? Is he actually supposed to be a "witchdoctor"? It IS like he put the hex on her or something.

  14. I bought the dvd ages ago, very timeless piece of art jewel , best film Joan Crawford made, thanks for showing it for free, especially in this period of time where nearly the whole world seems to be in Sadie Thompson's muddy shoes

  15. Crawford is fine in this part. Sadie Thompson isn't going to work unless she's played over the top. And I like that creepy native song the fishermen are singing. It haunts you later. But, come on, this is definitely one of Walter Houston's rare terrible performances.

  16. One of Crawford's rare flops at a time when her career was riding high. Why it failed I can't figure out; she's great in a role that stretches her acting ability beyond anything she had ever attempted before.

And she's assisted by a great bunch of character actors. Oddly enough, the one weak link in the film also happens to be the one really great actor in the cast: Walter Huston as Davidson. His performance is over the top to the point of ridiculousness and next to him Crawford's realistic, down to earth portrayal is light years better.

  17. This remake of a fantastic scipt was the last film to be aired before the ludicrous censorship took old over Hollywood. .even though the Hayes committee was in force this squeaked through. I think this is one of the best films of the day. Superb acting by Crawford. ..and even though others seem to think , weak performances by the rest of the cast, I think it's spot on…All around a great, great remarkable film…..simply superb!

  18. The Sabbath is Saturday, and religion poisons everything. That kind of shit is what drove me away from christianity into the loving arms of rational thinkers! Atheism ftw

  19. I actually prefer the silent version with Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson). Although it's not a complete print what's there is far more chilling than this version. Check it out sometime.

  20. I read somewhere than Joan said she was born in 1908. That would make her 24 years old in this film. She looks good in this film though she looks more 30ish to me… She may have shaved off several years from her age to get more offers to do films as was common back then.. well actually, it`s still common today.
