The War of the Worlds (1953)

Gene Barry (TV’s Bat Masterson) and Ann Robinson (TV’s Fury) are among the humans intrigued when a meteor-like object crashes to Earth … but its occupants are definitely not friendly. The assault on Earth is underway, and the Martian machines — hovering “swan”-shaped vehicles of destruction — are both beautiful and terrifying as they cut a relentless path of annihilation.

  1. Fake widescreen. You cropped out details from the top and bottom of the screen. We no longer see the cards the guy is peeking at at 4:58, nor do we see the Christ the Redeemer statue in the closing epilogue.

  2. When the movie studio asked the pentagon for assistance filming the opening military battle, using U.S. troops, they said no. The studio then heard local California USMC troops were conducting training maneuvers in the desert. They asked them. They were thrilled to be part of the movie, so, those are real troops and equipment, volunteering to be in the film. You can't get any more realistic than that, and it shows. They look great, really adding authenticity to this stunning sci-fi classic.

  3. Who else on here is having audio troubles trying to watch this movie? Movies playing but I have nothing to hear. No volume or nothing. What the hell is going on!? 🤦‍♂️🤷‍♂️

  4. If I were in charge I would’ve ordered 105mm pieces to blast the hell out of all Martian cylinders that landed. It is foolish to let an enemy go untouched while they’re vulnerable. The 105s had an effective capability and would’ve been well out of heat ray range. Are there any military people here that can confirm this?

  5. Producer George Pal was way ahead of his time when he created this film. The SFX were revolutionary, and so much better than everything else in the Sci-Fi genre.

  6. I saw this as a child in the Bronx, my siblings and I terrified, and as teenagers my sister and I heard the Orson Wells's historic rebroadcast in the 1970's (can't remember exact date). I still love this film! Also, many Sci-fi of the 40's, 50's and 60's mention God! And that's why I will always love these movies. ❤😊
