Unforgiven

Odd Western about racial intolerance focuses around Kiowa claim that the Zachary daughter is one of their own, stolen in a raid. The dispute results in other whites’ turning their backs on the Zacharys when the truth is revealed by Mother. Murphy plays Cash, the hotheaded brother who reacts violently to learning his “sister” is a “red-hide Indian.” He leaves the family but returns to help them fight off an Indian raid during which Hepburn kills her Kiowa brother, thus choosing sides once and for all.

  1. Kiowa would have been more likely to steal Rachael like they did horses, WITHOUT casualties – they weren't stupid and definitely couldn't afford to squander warriors

Wow, worth watching, they could have added mystery & crime to its film classification, then ending was an emotional roller coaster…

  3. Interesting film. Oddly shot & scored, almost as a silent film. A number of shot of the incomparable Miss Gish specifically hearken back to shots of her in Griffith pictures. Numerous other shots remind me of early silent Westerns. The score never lets up as in a silent picture, it was there for setting the emotion of the shot, in this instance it is often intrusive. I understand many compromises were made due to disagreements between John Huston & HHL, the producers. I would like to have seen Huston's vision of the film.

  4. My paternal Grandmother was Alaska native Tlingit and her son my uncle who was a green beret lived in denial most of his life saying he wasn't. Guess he didn't want to be a red hot nigger. He had white privilege and never gave any consideration to that part of his family history. Guess he was ashamed of who he was. I'm proud to be Tlingit or a red hot nigger.
