Many fans of the great Esther Williams will argue that Million Dollar Mermaid was her best movie. Yes, the movie did have some of the most dazzling and spectacular swim sequences on celluloid, and Ms. Williams did not have a rival for the entire duration of her career because MGM [her home studio] saw to it that there was and will always be only One Esther Williams. She was unparalleled as no other star [in Hollywood] had the gumption to try and compete with her. I too loved Million Dollar Mermaid, but my personal choice of best Esther Williams film was "Easy to love". Yes, the film had superb swimming sequences, but it also had four great numbers by Tony Martin, plus there was comedy and romance provided by the very likable Van Johnson. My 2nd choice is "The Duchess of Idaho". Here too are eye-catching water ballets performed seamlessly by the gorgeous Esther, songs by Connie Haines, Van Johnson and Lena Horne, plus there was one foot-tapping number by veteran dancer, Eleanor Powell. The narrative was great fun too, ably supported by John Lund and Paula Raymond. As a matter of fact, all Esther Williams have great recall value even to this day and year, December 14, 1923. Fact is, Esther Williams lives on through her movies throughout the world and the reason for this is that we have never stopped loving Esther.
