Storyline:
In anticipation of a raid by the deadly Wagner outlaw gang, the townsfolk of Virginia City want to replace their ageing sheriff Roy Coffee, whom they feel is not equal to the task of standing up to the Wagners. Adam Cartwright is among the few who insists that Coffee remain in office-but even he has second thoughts when the Sheriff appears to be suffering from a latent case of cowardice. Written by Jerry Adelman, this episode was a tour de force for veteran character actor Ray Teal, here given a rare opportunity to deliver a performance that transcends the standard two-dimensionality of Sheriff Roy Coffee. Reviews:
“Ray Teal who was for so many years a semi-regular on Bonanza as sheriff Roy Coffee he was like a piece of furniture from the Ponderosa house gets center stage in this episode.
Some folks on the Virginia City Town Council think that Teal has seen his best days especially since he was wounded dealing with a drunk. Also the notorious Wagner gang is in the area robbing banks and spreading a lot of mayhem. Some citizens wonder if Teal can still cut it.
Pernell Roberts who is on the town council offers to help Teal out. For the only time in Bonanza’s run, Sheriff Coffee opens up about himself. We learn he’s a widower with no children and he looks on the citizens of Virginia City as kind of his children. The job is his life.
All I’ll say is that in the end it’s proved the man still has what it takes to get the job done.
Nice to see Ray Teal get center stage in an episode.” Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com

Rig up some claymores at the border of the town such as the ones used in Vietnam and have people watch for the gang and when the Wagner gang does some bad crime set off the Claymores on them; when they leave town.
The guy in the safe was kinda hooped if the chose to stay !
Need to give ole Roy raise!
This is my favorite of all Bonanza episodes, so well done. Ray Teal is great.
Lots of memorable episodes but this is my favorite.
I guess the Wagner gang warned the Cartwrights before riding onto town, since they all happened to be there to stop the posse and help Sheriff Roy.
Great episode!
Brains win over guns…
JLV&FRC ELDORADO, SIN
One of the best "outdoor" indoor soundstage sets ever ! Look at the beauty and sheer scale of it. The production designer, and set decorator outdid themselves on that one. Just wish we could have gotten more than a couple minutes of screentime with it. If I ever get a house, and can afford to make my bedroom look like anything, it will be this. I will get a bedroll, and sleep out on the "open prairie". Much love at 31:42.❤
This is one of the best Bonanza episodes and that is because Ray Teal, finally, had such a major role in this episode. That’s the main reason but the 2nd reason is that the writers chose Pernell to be right along with him. Great episode, great episode!!!!
Jesus saves .
"What brings you into town, Ben?" The Cartwrights are ALWAYS in town sticking their noses into everyone's business.
This is easily one of the best Bonanza episodes I've seen and with the story line and how the Sheriff catches the bank robbers is classic.
I've seen this so many times in reruns but it's one of the best Bonanza episodes ever. Thanks for bringing it to YouTube.
Man this one makes me cry like a big baby lol
Once again, this proves that wisdom and experience are preferable to the use of force and unnecessary violence. Well done, Sheriff Roy!
Head city council member always played a brown noser
In previous episodes Ben doesn't have a vote in Virginia City because the Ponderosa is outside the city. Now he's on City council? The writers should have kept their stories straight.
I wonder how happy a woman Carter’s wife was?
This episod along with twilight town and the one when Joe was obsessed with the detective novels are my favorite.
Possibly the Very best Bonanza programme ever. I think I’ve seen most too. Lots we need to learn from it even today in 2024
Why the unnecessary hostility at the beginning surrounding whose going to open the door? Compost heap? In 18 whatever? Other than that, most episodes focused on Pernell Roberts were probably the best ones in my opinion.
Parley Baer. At his officious city official, best! 🤓😎✌🏼
They don’t need a faster gun sheriff he does his job better than any other sheriff but I will admit when I first saw him when I was first watching Bonanza I will admit that I didn’t like the sheriff that much that’s because I didn’t give him a chance but over time when I started watching Bonanza more and more I started to like the sheriff as the character

I see way too many haters always dissing Roy coffee. Idk if it's because people are jealous, or police haters or what but imo America would be a whole lot better off if we had more Roy coffees
Gotta love Bonanza. I don't think there are any moral TV shows left, and TV is such an influential form of media. Shows like Bonanza and Little House On The Prairie need to make a comeback. If you follow Jesus, you probably think the same. The eyes are the windows to the soul.
How old is little Joe,
Given the percentage of the population that was armed back in those days, this episode is a bit of a stretch…

Bonanza became a classical TV shows in all time … I love so much
