  1. From the perspective of an Australian in 2025, this seems like a quaint, story with a simple and slightly dull message of 'Young, smart guy becomes successful'. But that's missing the point. The film was set in the 1890's and England was a highly stratified class-ridden society and he had come from the bottom of the heap. This was not a story about making money. It was about a man totally ignoring his station in life and his vertical rise through the classes. His mother could not handle such a transition and criticised him for 'puttin on airs'. She refused to move to a nicer home or to wear a nice jacket above her washerwoman station. Such was the power of the class society perpetuating their system. At the ball he had the brashness to ignore the strata of the frightened middle class and went straight up to the Dutchess and asked for a dance. Unheard of! Then he, a commoner had the temerity to attempt to become Mayor of his town.
This is hard for current culture to understand, who only sees the movie as a financial struggle and not a class struggle, because to a contemporary Australian, such class limitations are unfathomable and alien concepts..

  2. Sir Alec Guinness was one of the rare actor's who were able to show the emotions and thoughts through the eyes .I admire this intelligence , sensitive and talented actor 👍👏👏👏🙏 🙋🇩🇪❤️

  3. The most opportunistic class comedy I've ever seen, PLUS some amazing stunt visuals that I didn't expect! Just SO, so, well made! Mom is not convinced.

  4. Dee-lightful. I was wondering when I was going to see Wifred Hyde-White, and Trubshawe (David Niven's great friend), and they showed up at the end. I don't recall ever seeing Glynis Johns in an unsympathetic role before.

  5. Very engaging film and a decent print .
Petula Clark was a good actress , and very pretty too .
She must be in her mid 90's now . She's one of my favourite singers . 😊

  6. Grew up In 70s and 80s watching films of the time and some from the 60s . So loving finding all these old classics from the 30s 40s and 50s ..not many good modern films out lately ….really enjoyed this one

  7. Adorable flick.❤Thx UT. Glynnis Johns is always a delight. Her Betty Boop voice is comical but seems to fit her. Alec Guiness works so well with her. They r masters of their craft. Usually watch mysteries but what a nice change this one was.
