Reviews:
“What DeForest Kelley did to warrant the Apaches coming after him all the way to Nevada we’d call a war crime. during an alleged peace parley Kelley poisoned he food and drink and killed men, women, and children. Led by Cochise theyve chased him to the borders of the Ponderosa where Kelley seeks refuge with the Cartwrights before they find out what he’s done.

This episode belongs to Lorne Greene as he seeks a truce so that a wounded Pernell Roberts cawn get aid. He promises to see that Kelley is brought to justice. Will Cochise believe him?

Jeff Morrow plays Cochise and he pretty much follows in the footsteps of Jeff Chandler as the stoic and wise warrior chief.

It’s a good episode with kudos to Jeff Morrow.” Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com

“This episode aired early in October 1961, the 3rd episode of the 3rd season. The Cartwrights run into a soldier (DeForest Kelly) on the run from a band of Indians led by Cochise (Jeff Morrow).

A note: By the start of the 3rd season, the Cartwrights had settled into their customary uniforms they wore throughout the duration of the series. Look for Bing Russell as a cavalryman who tries to defeat Cochise. Very shortly after this episode he assumed the role of Deputy Clem, which he kept until the show concluded in 1973.

This episode is particularly outstanding due to the performance of DeForest Kelly. You can see the sweat, grime, dirt, fear, evil, confusion, & stubbornness of his character as he defends his actions. It’s a performance that deserves repeat viewings. When he keeps repeating “But I was only following orders” you kinda feel a little sympathy for him.

Jeff Morrow, who made a lot of westerns in the 1950s, brings a quiet dignity & honor in his portrayal of Cochise. Even though he’s not an Indian, his performance works.

Finally, this episode deals with history in that the U.S. Cavalry sometimes had to use any means necessary in their battles with the American Indians. This episode also makes the viewer think about what is wrong & right during war. I wholly recommend it.” Written by jeremylr on IMDb.com

Reviews:
“I just couldn’t resist.

The fundamental problem with TV stories about American/aboriginal relationships is that they fail to address the fact the American government waged a war of genocide. And regardless of good will (on either side), there was a fundamental economic conflict that ultimately doomed the aboriginals to defeat.

“The Deserter” is only slightly better than average. The chief eventually recognizes that killing the officer who murdered the women and children of his tribe can only bring more tsuris. But the profound distrust and “acidity” of feeling that should remain after his acquiescence is not present. Ultimately, this is yet another “White viewer, you needn’t feel too guilty” stories.

Claude Akins gives a pretty good performance. He has scenes were he has to show some subtlety of emotion — which he was rarely called on to deliver — and is creditable.” Written by grizzledgeezer on IMDb.com

“Claude Akins with gray hair and a mustache plays an iron colonel who is looking for an army deserter from a battle he was in command of against the Shoshone Indians over a decade ago. It was no battle really, Akins led a raid against a village where Shoshone women and children were massacred. And as it turns out the deserter is a neighbor of the Cartwrights and his own son.

The only thing that made sense about this episode was the determination of the Shoshone to see him die slow. Everything else about this Bonanza episode was totally preposterous. Akins finds his son who has married a Shoshone woman and he now has grandchildren.

Lorne Greene gets Shoshone chief Anthony Caruso to reason together with Akins. It all works out, everyone does the noble and right thing.

I think there’s no way that Akins would have left the territory alive. But you’ll have to see for yourself if you care.” Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com

The Lone Ranger is a fictional masked former Texas Ranger who fought outlaws in the American Old West with his Native American friend, Tonto. The character has been called an enduring icon of American culture.

The Lone Ranger was named so because the character is the only survivor of a group of six Texas Rangers, rather than because he works alone (as he is usually accompanied by his Native American companion Tonto). While details differ, the basic story of the origin of the Lone Ranger is the same in most versions of the franchise. A posse of six members of the Texas Ranger Division pursuing a band of outlaws led by Bartholomew “Butch” Cavendish is betrayed by a civilian guide named Collins and is ambushed in a canyon named Bryant’s Gap. Later, an Indian named Tonto stumbles onto the scene and discovers one ranger is barely alive, and he nurses the man back to health. In some versions, Tonto recognizes the lone survivor as the man who saved his life when they both were children. According to the television series, when Tonto left the Reid place with a horse given him by the boy Reid, he gave Reid a ring and the name Kemo Sabe, which he said means “trusty scout”. Among the Rangers killed was the survivor’s older brother, Daniel Reid, who was a captain in the Texas Rangers and the leader of the ambushed group. To conceal his identity and honor his fallen brother, Reid fashions a black domino mask from the material of his brother’s vest. To aid in the deception, Tonto digs a sixth grave and places at its head a cross bearing Reid’s name so that Cavendish and his gang would believe that all of the Rangers had been killed.

In many versions Reid continues fighting for justice as The Lone Ranger even after the Cavendish gang is captured.

Caesar the Conqueror | Historical Film | Drama | Classic Movie | Full Length

Classic Film about Caesar versus Vercingetorix: Caesar the Conqueror – Julius Caesar leads the Roman army to battle against rebels in Gaul.

Caesar the Conqueror (1962)
Director: Tanio Boccia
Writers: Gaio Giulio Cesare(book “De Bello Gallico”), Arpad DeRiso(adaptation and screenplay), Giovanni Scolaro(adaptation and screenplay)
Stars: Cameron Mitchell, Rik Battaglia, Dominique Wilms
Genre: Adventure, Biography, Drama, History, War
Country: Italy
Language: English
Release Date: 27 September 1962 (Italy)
Duration: 97 min
Filming Location: Dino De Laurentiis Cinematografica Studios, Rome, Lazio, Italy

Storyline:
In 54 B.C. Julius Caesar seeks to solidify his position in Rome by putting down a rebellion in Gaul led by a tribal chieftain named Vercingetorix. Vercingetorix has rallied many tribes to his cause, including one led by the beautiful Queen Asterix and others who’d once pledged allegiance to Rome. At first things go badly for the Romans, complicated by the fact that Vercingetorix has captured and tortured a centurion named Claudius Valerius who’s in love with Caesar’s ward, Publia, who has also fallen into the hands of Vercingetorix. Eventually a great battle pitting Caesar against the rebellious Gaul decides the fate of all concerned.

Reviews:
“Here’s a low-budget but epic-looking peplum movie which begins with lots of suspenseful court intrigue as the Roman senate conspire against Caesar, and ends with a predictable but rousing battle sequence which leaves bodies strewn asunder. Now to many people this will just seem like another typical peplum movie with not much to distinguish it from dozens of others. There’s one difference – for a change we have a strong acting performance from Cameron Mitchell, resplendent in a grey wig as Julius Caesar. Mitchell’s character is actually explored in the movie and given motivation, while the scriptwriters go behind the scenes to show the powerful, occasionally cruel, but just, man that he was (being an Italian movie this is obviously on Rome’s “side” and depicting the Gaul as bloodthirsty barbarians).

The costumes and sets are immaculate, giving the film a really authentic look which is one of the strong points, and there’s plenty of action to keep the drama moving along nicely. Bloody battles are done in style on wide grassy plains and with good choreography and lots of bloodshed and death. This is a surprisingly grisly film for the time in which it was made, with some strong moments of torture via red-hot pincers and scenes like when a soldier is axed in the head with blood pouring down his face which act as a forerunner to the atrocity movies they were making in the early ’80s. Arrows drive into heads and through necks and bodies are impaled and stabbed on swords, so this definitely isn’t a movie for children. Whoever said that BRAVEHEART paved the way for historical war violence was obviously mistaken!

[…]

I found this to be a pretty involving movie in that we learned to care for the characters instead of simply not giving a damn as in so many films. I would even go so far as to say that some moments – like a pan over a field littered with the mutilated bodies of the dead – are pretty humbling as the film-makers intended while the action is both stirring and exciting. Sure, the low budget is evident in the occasional use of stock footage but nonetheless, CAESAR THE CONQUEROR is an enjoyable, old-fashioned yarn which could stand up with the best of them.”-Written by Leofwine-draca on IMDb.com
