  1. Christopher Plummer died this week. In 2009, I had the enormous pleasure of seeing.him play Caesar in "Caesar and Cleopatra" at the Stratford Festival in Ontario. At 79, he was theoretically nearly thirty years too old for the part; but his vigor and vitality were those of a man half his age. Even his complexion (as seen through opera glasses) was extraordinarily youthful. Cleopatra was played by a delightful young American actress named Nikki James, who (INCREDIBLY!) played Cleopatra in the evening, and Juliet at the matinees (and did both superbly). I'm a Shaw nut, and seeing this wonderful (and seldom performed) play done in the splendor of a full production was nectar and ambrosia. Caesar's opening speech to the Sphinx is a glorious piece of prose poetry that Shakespeare would have been proud to have written (and there are plenty more to follow it). Thank heaven we have this gorgeous film to enjoy.

  2. This was a time where white people always assumed black peoples roles, I love Vivien but this was wrong

  3. Thanks for posting this great movie. I've loved it since I was a child. I only recently discovered how remarkably true it is to Shaw's original play — only two or three significant excisions, and they are improvements.

  4. They do not make movies such as this any more.  A Great Cast, Script, Direction, Cinematography…..A Real Treat…I salute Imb52 for posting this wonderful work of art.
