This 1946 MGM movie musical is based on the life of composer Jerome Kern. There are many stars in the movie and others who make cameos. Among those in this movie June Allyson, Judy Garland,
Lena Horne, Lucille Bremer, Esther Williams, Frank Sinatra and others. The American Film Institute in 2006 added this film to its list of “Greats Movie Musicals”

  1. Fun movie from the great MGM talent roster. Notice, they didn't even try to give the English wife an English accent? And the art direction for the last group of songs was so over the top.

  2. Fantastic. Growing up watching these old movies. Katherine Graysons beautiful voice. Those songs and dancing. Just beautiful.

  3. My mom is 93 and I am 74 and these movies were made in my mother’s youth and I watched them with her on TV later on. We loved them so much. I was born in 1946 and my mom was only 18 and my dad had Beni the Navy during WWII.

  4. Judy Garland, June Allyson, The Champions, Van Johnson in his song and dance phase, Tony Martin; so much in the film is excellent! But, Sinatra closing it with Old Man River? Ewww! When Paul Robeson was at his peak? And the Hollywood "touch" on so much of the music from Showboat, which is on of my very favorite musicals of all time? Well, 1946; I guess the racism one sees in the film is simply a factor of the time. And the musical arrangements par for the period. What I didn't love I absolutely hated… Worth watching, but definitely not on my personal list of great musicals.

  5. Van Johnson's cameo singing "I won't dance" shows his musical talent. During the 40s he was MGM's all-American boy. He and Gene Kelly were both brought from Broadway's Pal Joey. They didn't cross paths often but were together for "Brigadoon" in 50s. It was "In the Good Old Summertime" with Judy Garland that Liza makes an appearance at the end of the movie. She was 2 and appeared as the daughter of Judy and Van Johnson's characters..

  6. After watching this movie for the last 50 years, I'd still love to know how they did that pullback shot at the end, with the spiral staircase going up to "The Land Where Good Songs Go". Also, with all those columns with singers on them, it looks like a few songs from this number must have gotten cut. Glad it wasn't Lena's.
