Culloden (1964 Peter Watkins)

Culloden (known as The Battle of Culloden in the US) is a 1964 docudrama written and directed by Peter Watkins for BBC TV. It portrays the 1746 Battle of Culloden that resulted in the British Army’s destruction of the Scottish Jacobite rising of 1745 and, in the words of the narrator, “tore apart forever the clan system of the Scottish Highlands.” Described in its opening credits as “an account of one of the most mishandled and brutal battles ever fought in Britain,” Culloden was hailed as a breakthrough for its its presentation of a historical event in the style of modern TV war reporting, as well as its use of non-professional actors. The film was based on John Prebble’s study of the battle.

  1. Horrifying … Would that the pittance nomenclatures as the English Crown forfeit restitution to the Scots & the Irish …never will be enough … that they give heritage back to heritage as we are still waiting to know … all of us heritaged to the Famines the Banishments … Disengagement from their Culture Their Language Their Culture Their Rights of Expression Their LAND Their Lineage …Soverignity to their true countries….as Democracies …..
God Bless Harry Windsor for ceasing his occupancy of Monarchy … For leaving & thriving & giving his now OWN heritage a truth…
For England should leave both Ireland & Scotland their Sovereign Countries Restored … Revolting to see the English Monarch's Charities after denying country's themselves banning their existence their culture casting them starving to Australia, Von Diemens Island, Canada, Barbados … Restitution & Restoration of Lands … While your filthy Russian Heired Prime Minister Boris Johnson be stuffed with an apple in mouth & put on a spit … U.K. is not United & in a state of economic collapse …
I knew the story of Culloden … But never saw a film racount though older piece so detailed & accurate & so indicative of the ENGLISH WAY … their quietude of hyaneousness is to simply not mention the atrocities they perform … for eternity …
Restore Ireland Scotland their heritage their land their culture on their land…as well their Flags with not a trace of England ~

  2. I love how the Royal army comes over the hill at the beginning. Confident, leisurely. Like they have all the time in the world to kill those Jacobite rebels. I'd be wetting my kilt if I was on the other side.

  3. They supported the Catholicians because Scotland countryside surffered poverty, hungry and misery . . . High taxes commited by Hannover . . .

So they didn't find a tidy or steadfast leading .
Charlie would neverthless win that war because English were more geared on weapons than ScotHighlanders .

English committed atrocity as Nazists – extreme butchery without compassion . . .

  4. I have head that had Bonnie Prince Charlie succeeded, he would have been a kindlly, benevolent monarch. It was Stinking Billy who was the real tyrant and rogue.

  5. I visited this battlefield last year. It was fascinating to learn about, and this film depicted the battle in a new, terrifying way. Great job to the filmmakers and actors! May nothing like this ever happen again!

  6. Scots blame anything but themselves. They invaded England and tried to take over the country, so what did they expect, a thank you? You're all full of bile and romantic nonsense about Clans and Tartan. Your Lowland Scots detested them far more than any Englishman and try to remember this, it happened 272 years ago and you're still fighting the battle. Grow up.

  7. The poor, weak, starving, uneducated, desperate but willing?… fighting the battles of the sickofanticts and the lust for land, glory, greed and god?… GOOD GAME GOOD GAME… play it all day long, what do points make?… PRIZES.
