  1. I remember watching this film in the early 70s, aged about 8, and crying when the father was trapped underground. We were living in a small house of 3-generations, and my grandfather and father were both Welsh Valleys' miners. I was the first generation not to go underground and the family mining history goes back to the 1860s, my great-grandfather was killed underground in 1916 when my grandmother was aged just 2.

Of course, the film is set on a Hollywood film set, and does little to capture the grimness, darkness and realities of Welsh Valley's life. Men over the age of 50-struggled to breath, let alone sing, and everything is so large and bright. Welsh mining houses were tiny with a shared toilet at the bottom of the garden in late Victorian Times. But heck, it's a film and it should be forgiven its Hollywood poetic licence and enjoyed for what it is – an all-time classic.

  2. Who else gets tired of hearing film critics and buffs bash this film for the same tired old reason instead of judging it purely on its own artistic merits?

  3. The innocence, the togetherness, the family values, the work ethic, the virtues, the respect and dignity, the pride….yes there where some bad things but what such a beautiful film and wow how times have changed…not in every way for the better in my opinion.

  4. I don't like it, a sentimentalised vision of Wales made by people who knew nothing about it. I prefer the BBC Wales TV version with Stanley Baker and Sian Phillips which is much closer to the spirit and tone of the original novel.

  5. How can any "movie" in 2020 compare to something like this?
It's a standard that can not be matched today. Never happen like this again. And it's a cryin' shame.
God did bless John Ford. And thank God he did. Beautiful simply beautiful.
Good night and God Bless All

  6. Roddy McDowell, reminds me so much of my grandsons. His politeness, kindness, it's uncanny. When he steps on the football field, it's like a doctor jekyll/ mr. Hyde !! A sweet little boy turning into a fine young man.

  9. Pure Hollywood from start to finish. From the big house (a miners cottage was usually two up two down with a scullery at the back)the little white aprons, the large roasts and ever full tables, the American/Irish / Welsh accents to the miners singing their hearts out on the way home (by the way not all Welsh people can sing). I was born in a Welsh mining valley and used to listen to the stories told by the ‘old people’ who had been born in the 1880’s. Lovely people indeed, but this film was Hollywood saccharine , not to be taken as the reality of the times.

  11. Oh dear. What a crock of shit. The writer was English! He got the stories from his neighbours. Miners singing after a shift? Bullshit. They could hardly breathe, let alone sing.
How do I know? I was born in the valleys. The colliery was 500 yards away. I watched them wheeze as they tried to walk up the hill to their homes. This film is a load of garbage. Both of my grandfathers watched for a few minutes and shook their heads with disgust. This crap isn’t Wales. It’s a disgrace.

  12. Everything about this movie is so outdated and I think that's why I find it so fascinating. It's like an artifact, but like a valuable artifact. It's not just the time period in which the story is supposed to be taking place in, its also the style of the movie itself that seems so outdated. And you can't really tell which is which: is it the customs of the people in the movie that are outdated, or is it just the movie itself that is outdated? That's what makes it so interesting to me.
