  1. Never knew of this film til today, great! I met Diahhan Carrol in an elevator a few years before she died, blurted out “Oh my god I have your lunchbox!” ( I collect old lunchboxes) She responded with “You’re not old enough to have my lunchbox”. So that was nice because I was in my mid 50’s at that time. Lol.

  2. I get this was made in 1961 so that's why the production company chickened out and didn't continue with the relationship between Ram & Connie but I wish they had. It would've been a revolutionary film for the time especially with such dynamic stars in Paul & Diahann. Plus Ram & Connie had wayyyyy more chemistry. (Which is funny considering Paul & Joanne were actually married in real life.)

  4. There’s an attraction between Diahanne Carroll and Paul Newman in this film to bad 1961 America was too chicken to let that attraction grow and develop!

  5. Thanks so much for uploading this. I'd never heard of it til I saw a photo of Newman and Carroll on IG and did a little research. What a cast! and soundtrack by Duke Ellington. Why is this film not better known?

  6. This movie is showing how a white woman will put out quick. And Ram knew it and just decided to get it over with since she was desparate.

  7. That steam engine train though! Still even in 1961! Awesome! 🙂 (also… Paul Newman's great looking strong angular jawline also in 1961 lol!)

  8. This is sad. Diahann Carroll was pushed on Sidney, Paul was pushed on Joanne, just because of race, not mutual interests.

Plus Diahann was too race loyal, where she couldn't even enjoy herself. Everything was about race, race, race.
Let it go lady. Enjoy urself. Paris is where ppl go to forget their BluES.

In real life, they intermarry ??‍♀️ but this I have to be about my ppl is a lost cause.

  9. I sketched The Great Satchmo, back in art class. Imagine my surprise when I saw it lining the auditorium walls.
I was never egotistical, so I never told my friends.
Wished I had it now to frame and keep.

  10. Serge Reggiani–Gypsy–was a very popular French singer and actor. His career did not really take off until he was 40 and went on for another forty years.

  11. I was wondering who really played the trombone and sax solos, and IMDB had an answer:

Paul Newman was coached in playing the trombone by Billy Byers while the playing for Newman on the soundtrack was done by Murray McEachern. Sidney Poitier's tenor sax playing was done by Paul Gonsalves. The soundtrack was recorded May 1-3, 1961 at Reeves Sound Studios in New York City.

  12. -The time from the 1950s r&b/r&r, to 60s Motown & the Beatles, Jazz was deep & improvisational! & The crowd in there had beatniks, unmarried couples, interracial couples, addicts, etc. ,,,& Ram knew he wasn't leaving Paris with the American girl, when his entire world was set up there. & He also had the sexier Paris girl who ran the nightclub. ,,,It all adds up to 1 of my favs.
