  1. A great movie. I saw it when I was a kid. I love adventure films and especially with sail ships, treasure, tropical islands and John Wayne. I have been a scuba instructor and I can tell you one thing going down to seek out treasures of the deep is risky business.

  2. Michael Hoey is Captain Munsey, in the bar and later at the Sydneye mansion — he was Inspector Lasarde in several of the Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes movies.
Trivia: At the beginning, as a voice reads the book copy you will see the words Batjac and it's mentioned at Wayne's court inquiry — that's where Wayne got the name for his film company.
Jeff Corey (Mr. Loring) later made True Grit with John Wayne when Jeff played the killer Chaney who shot Mattie's father and she hired Rooster Cogburn to go into the Indian Territory to hunt him down.

  3. In all my life I've never seen John Wayne die , that I know of. Yet in death he was reunited with Gail Russell, who also rode home with him in "Angel and The Bad Man"

  4. I remember watching this movie as a kid, I also remember I wanted a GI Joe deep sea diver suit, I ended up getting it for X-mas, spent many hours in the bathtub, pretending he was fighting giant octopuses and diving for gold.

  5. Batjac is the name of of the shipping company, right?
So as soon as I finished this movie, I happened to go to another Wayne movie: "McLintock!" And the first thing is says in the opening credits is, "Batjac Presents."
So what gives with the name "Batjac"?

UPDATE: Never mind. I went to the entry for Wayne in Wikipedia, and it had this to say: "Batjac, the production company cofounded by Wayne, was named after the fictional shipping company Batjak in Wake of the Red Witch."
(The spelling difference was due to a secretary's error.)
    Mystery solved.

  6. Wake Of The Red Witch, 1948. John Wayne's character in this movie had me second guessing everything. I was totally glued from start to finish. I think this was one of his best movies, his acting was so brilliant.

  7. "If money is your hope for independence you will never have it. The only real security that a man will have in this world is a reserve of knowledge, experience, and ability."

    Henry Ford

  8. Amazing how the ship heels in the wind with about a 35 degree tilt, yet the water barrel doesn't spill and everyone stands upright without support. Must be the gyros counter balancing the gimble.

  9. Trivia: The owner of the Red Witch was an company named Batjak. The company John Wayne founded as a production company was BatJac, accidentally misspelled by a secretary.

  10. Gail Russel fell in love with John Wayne during filming but he only liked Mexican women. Then she fell in love with Gary Cooper , she was always falling for her leading men.
